West Yellowstone sits at about 2,000 metres on the Montana side of the Idaho border, right at the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Its streets of log-fronted shops, motels and restaurants serve the park, and a museum in the old railway depot tells how early visitors arrived by train. A wildlife centre cares for grizzly bears and wolves that cannot be returned to the wild.
Inside the park, Old Faithful geyser and the Upper Geyser Basin lie about 50 km from the gate, with the colourful Grand Prismatic Spring along the Firehole River. Yellowstone Lake and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, with its two waterfalls, draw crowds, and the Hayden and Lamar valleys are the places to look for bison, elk and wolves. North-west of the town, Hebgen Lake and Earthquake Lake, which a landslide formed in 1959, lie on the Madison River.
Huckleberry ice cream, pie and jam are the local flavours, along with bison burgers and trout. Winters are long and snowy, with snowcoaches and snowmobiles carrying winter visitors into the park, and summers are short, with cool nights.
