Bozeman lies in the broad Gallatin Valley in south-west Montana, with the Bridger and Gallatin mountain ranges rising on either side. Montana State University gives the town a youthful feel. The historic Main Street has brick storefronts from the late nineteenth century, now holding bookshops, galleries and cafés, and the Museum of the Rockies holds a large collection of dinosaur fossils, including several Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons.
Hyalite Canyon, south of town, has a reservoir, waterfalls and trails, and in winter its frozen falls draw ice climbers. Bridger Bowl ski area is north-east of town and Big Sky Resort is to the south. The Gallatin River runs through a canyon good for fishing and rafting on the road to Yellowstone National Park. Missouri Headwaters State Park, where three rivers form the Missouri, lies to the west.
Bison burgers, Montana beef and anything made with huckleberries, from pie to jam to ice cream, are the local fare, with craft beer from small breweries. Summers are warm and dry, autumn turns the cottonwoods gold, and winters bring deep snow.
