The Big Island is larger than all the other Hawaiian islands combined and still being shaped by active volcanoes. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has steaming craters, lava fields and the Chain of Craters Road down to the sea. Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa both rise above 4,000 metres, and snow dusts their summits in winter.
The Hilo side is rainy and lush, with waterfalls such as Akaka Falls, while the Kona side is dry and sunny, with coffee farms, snorkelling at Kealakekua Bay and manta rays gathering off the coast at night. Black-sand beaches such as Punaluʻu have sea turtles, the green-sand beach at Papakōlea is a hike away, and Waipiʻo Valley's dramatic cliffs are in the north-east. Stargazers head up Mauna Kea at sunset.
Kona coffee and macadamia nuts are grown on the slopes, and local plates include poke, loco moco, kalua pork and shave ice. The weather varies with altitude: warm and dry on the west, wet in the east, and cold at the summits. Temperatures are mild all year, with humpback whales offshore in winter.
