The Strip, a long boulevard of resorts, is the heart of the action, with replicas of Paris, Venice and ancient Egypt, dancing fountains, and observation decks and thrill rides high above the street. Shows range from acrobatic circus spectaculars and magic to concert residencies, and restaurants run by star chefs sit beside lavish buffets.
Downtown, Fremont Street is covered by a vast canopy of lights above its older casinos, the Neon Museum's boneyard preserves vintage signs, and the Arts District has galleries, vintage shops and craft-beer bars. The city is also a major venue for boxing, concerts and professional sport, and pool parties draw crowds in the summer heat.
Out of town, the desert is spectacular. Red Rock Canyon's sandstone cliffs are a short drive west, the Hoover Dam straddles the Colorado River to the southeast, and the Grand Canyon, the Valley of Fire and Death Valley make memorable longer trips by road or helicopter. Visits are most comfortable in spring and autumn; summer is scorching, and winter days are mild with cold nights.
