Experience the best of Maui

Maui is the Hawaiian island of golden beaches, the Haleakalā volcano and the winding Road to Hana, with humpback whales offshore in winter.

Maui is the second-largest Hawaiian island, formed by two volcanic mountains joined by a low isthmus. Haleakalā, a vast dormant volcano rising over 3,000 metres, has a crater of coloured cinder and is famed for its sunrises and starry skies. The beaches of Kāʻanapali and Kapalua on the west face the sunset, and Wailea and Makena on the south coast have calm golden bays.

The Road to Hana follows the east coast through rainforest, past waterfalls and black-sand coves, with hundreds of bends and dozens of one-lane bridges. The Kīpahulu section of Haleakalā National Park has pools and a bamboo forest. Molokini, a crescent-shaped crater, is a snorkelling spot, and Iao Valley has a green needle-like peak. Lahaina, the old whaling port, was badly damaged by the wildfire of August 2023.

Maui offers fresh fish, poke, shave ice, banana bread from roadside stands, and sweet Maui onions and pineapple. Humpback whales visit from December to April, and the weather is warm all year, with the north and east shores wetter and the south and west drier.
