Alicante lies beneath Mount Benacantil, which carries the Santa Bárbara Castle, a fortress of Moorish origin with views over the bay. The Explanada de España, a palm-shaded promenade paved with a wavy pattern of marble tiles, runs along the harbour, and the old quarter of Santa Cruz climbs the hillside in whitewashed lanes. The modernist Central Market holds fish, produce and cured meats.
Tabarca, a small walled island with a marine reserve, is reached by boat from the harbour. The Palmeral of Elche, a UNESCO-listed palm grove, is a short drive to the south-west, Guadalest is a hill village under a castle inland, and Altea, white with a blue-domed church, lies along the coast. Benidorm's skyline and the rock of Calp's Peñón de Ifach are an hour or less to the north.
Arroz a banda, rice cooked in fish stock and served with garlic mayonnaise, is the city's dish, and arroz con costra from nearby Elche is baked with a crust of egg. Turrón, almond nougat, comes from Jijona and Alicante. In June the Hogueras de San Juan fill the streets with giant figures that are burned on midsummer night.
