Fuerteventura is the second-largest of the Canary Islands, a dry, windy island of long white-sand beaches, dunes and volcanic hills.

Its landscape is dry and open, with volcanic cones, rust-coloured mountains and miles of white and golden sand, and in 2009 UNESCO named the whole island a biosphere reserve. Puerto del Rosario is the capital, and Betancuria, an inland village of whitewashed houses, was the island's first capital.
