Highlights

Less than an hour from Lisbon lies Sintra, home to the Pena Palace—conceived by King Ferdinand II, a great enthusiast of the Romantic movement. You can also explore the unique architecture of the eccentric Quinta da Regaleira. While strolling through the winding streets of the historic center, be sure to visit Piriquita to sample some traditional pastries. Thanks to its location between the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, Sintra boasts a unique microclimate. On the way back to Lisbon, you will travel along the coast, visiting Cabo da Roca—the westernmost point in Europe—and the picturesque fishing village of Cascais. Sea bathing became popular in the second half of the 19th century; when King Luís I chose the Cascais fortress as his summer residence, the nobility transformed the fishing village into a seaside resort filled with palaces and stately mansions.

About Lisbon

Lisbon spills down its hills to the Tagus estuary, a city of tiled façades, rattling yellow trams, viewpoint terraces and late, unhurried dinners.

The old quarters hold most of the charm. Alfama's tangle of lanes climbs to São Jorge Castle and echoes with fado in the evening, the Baixa's orderly grid runs down to the vast Praça do Comércio on the river, and Bairro Alto and Chiado mix bookshops and cafés by day with bars by night. Viewpoints such as Santa Luzia and Senhora do Monte frame red rooftops and shining water.

Top-ranked sights in Lisbon: Commerce Square (Praça do Comércio), Pena National Palace (Palacio Nacional da Pena), Alfama.
