About Versailles
Versailles, west of Paris, is the town built around the palace of Louis XIV, with its Hall of Mirrors and formal gardens.
The Palace of Versailles began as a hunting lodge of Louis XIII, and Louis XIV turned it into the seat of royal power, moving the court here in 1682. Its centrepiece is the Hall of Mirrors, seventy-three metres long, with seventeen mirrored arches facing the garden windows, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in June 1919.
