  5. Up ahead is the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest monastery in Meteora. Like some of the other monasteries, it also has a second name, ‘The Metamorphosis of the Saviour’ monastery. But this monastery isn’t just big. It’s also the whole reason there are so many incredible monasteries in the first place!

  6. The history of this monastery is a little sketchy, in part because it was built by different people at many different time periods. Some evidence suggests the earliest construction may have begun in the mid-1300s, but the bulk of the monastery likely dates back to sometime around the 1470s.

  7. This is the most accessible of Meteora’s many monasteries, so don’t worry about climbing another 100 or two steps for this one! All you need to do to access it, is to cross a sturdy stone bridge. The Monastery of Saint Stephen is also simultaneously one of the oldest and newest monasteries in Meteora.

About Meteora

Meteora is a UNESCO site in central Greece where Orthodox monasteries stand on tall pillars of rock above the Thessalian plain.

Meteora is a forest of sandstone and conglomerate pillars, some hundreds of metres high, rising abruptly from the plain of Thessaly beside the town of Kalambaka. From the fourteenth century monks built monasteries on the summits, reaching them at first by ladders and rope nets, and six are still active. The Great Meteoron, Varlaam and Roussanou are among them, with frescoed chapels and views down the Pineios valley.
