Built over a relatively short period, some 38 years between 1220 and 1258, it has a unity and coherence that is unusual in medieval English cathedrals. The tower and spire were completed by 1330 and at 404 feet (123 m) is the tallest church spire in England. Early English church, home to the Magna Carta and notable clock dating from 1386, with tower tours.

It was built in several stages: the first monument was an early henge monument, built about 5,000 years ago, and the unique stone circle was erected in the late Neolithic period about 2500 BC. In the early Bronze Age many burial mounds were built nearby. Today, together with Avebury, Stonehenge forms the heart of a World Heritage Site, with a unique concentration of prehistoric monuments.

About Southampton

Southampton is a historic port on England's south coast, with medieval walls, Titanic history and the New Forest and the Isle of Wight close by.

Southampton lies at the head of Southampton Water, a deep sheltered inlet that has made it one of England's great ports for centuries. Stretches of the medieval town wall survive, along with the Bargate, a gateway that once marked the northern entrance, and Tudor House and Garden occupies a medieval merchant's house. The Titanic sailed from here in 1912, a story told in the SeaCity Museum, and the Mayflower set out from the port in 1620.
