Experience the best of Southampton

Southampton is a historic port on England's south coast, with medieval walls, Titanic history and the New Forest and the Isle of Wight close by.

Southampton lies at the head of Southampton Water, a deep sheltered inlet that has made it one of England's great ports for centuries. Stretches of the medieval town wall survive, along with the Bargate, a gateway that once marked the northern entrance, and Tudor House and Garden occupies a medieval merchant's house. The Titanic sailed from here in 1912, a story told in the SeaCity Museum, and the Mayflower set out from the port in 1620.

The city has broad green spaces, among them the Common with its lakes and meadows, and the waterfront at Ocean Village. Ferries cross to Hythe and to the Isle of Wight. West of the suburbs the New Forest begins, with its free-roaming ponies and ancient woodland, Winchester Cathedral is about twenty kilometres north, and Portsmouth's historic dockyard lies along the coast.

Hampshire watercress, grown in chalk-fed streams, is a regional speciality, and the pubs by the water serve local ales with fish and chips. Cruise ships tower beside the quays, and the Solent fills with yachts through the summer.
