  3. The Vindolanda Roman Fort is one of the best preserved, and most important Roman sites in the world. Archaeological excavations are still ongoing on this site, and the museum features a unique set of Roman artifacts, including a huge collection of shoes, the only Roman boxing gloves in the world, a toy sword and a toilet seat. You can also see the Vindolanda Tablets - considered by many as the most important Roman find of the 20th century, allowing a unique insight into the lives of people living at Vindolanda near Hadrian's Wall nearly 2000 years ago.

  5. The stunning Bamburgh Castle has stood upon a volcanic rock for 1,400 years, having been built by the early Anglo-Saxon kings of Northumberland. About Edinburgh

Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, rises on volcanic hills, with a castle on a crag, a medieval Old Town and an elegant Georgian New Town.

Edinburgh Castle crowns Castle Rock and keeps the Honours of Scotland, the Scottish crown jewels. From there, the Royal Mile runs downhill through the Old Town, past St Giles' Cathedral and a warren of narrow closes, to the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Scottish Parliament. Arthur's Seat, an ancient volcano, rises above the palace with sweeping views.

Top-ranked sights in Edinburgh: Royal Mile, Edinburgh Old Town, Edinburgh Castle.
