Experience the best of Zaragoza
Zaragoza is the capital of Aragón, a Roman and Moorish city on the Ebro, with a vast Baroque basilica, a Moorish palace and a lively tapas quarter.

Zaragoza lies on the Ebro river in the Aragonese plain, between Madrid and Barcelona. The Roman colony Caesaraugusta, named for Augustus, left remains of a forum, baths and theatre. The Basílica del Pilar, a vast Baroque church with eleven domes and frescoes by Goya, rises on the riverbank beside La Seo cathedral, whose walls mix Mudéjar, Gothic and Baroque styles.
The Aljafería, an eleventh-century Moorish palace with ornate arches, is now the seat of Aragon's parliament, and the El Tubo district, a web of narrow lanes, is the centre of tapas. The Goya Museum holds work by the painter, who trained here. The Expo 2008 site on the Ebro has a bridge pavilion by Zaha Hadid, the Monasterio de Piedra with its waterfalls lies about a hundred kilometres away, and the Pyrenees begin to the north.
Ternasco, young Aragonese lamb, and migas, fried breadcrumbs with chorizo, are traditional; candied fruit covered in chocolate is the sweet speciality, and Garnacha wines come from the nearby Cariñena and Campo de Borja regions. The cierzo, a strong cold north-west wind, sweeps the city, and summers are very hot.
