Experience the best of Wrexham

Wrexham is a city in north-east Wales, near the border with England and about 42 km south of Liverpool; it was granted city status in 2022. The tower of St Giles' Church, built in the early 16th century, is one of the traditional Seven Wonders of Wales, and in its churchyard lies Elihu Yale, the benefactor after whom Yale University is named. The Racecourse Ground, home to Wrexham AFC, is one of the oldest international football grounds in the world.

A few kilometres south, Erddig is a country house whose servants' quarters are as well preserved as the family rooms, and Chirk Castle is a medieval fortress. The Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, carries the Llangollen Canal high over the River Dee valley, and the town of Llangollen hosts an international music festival each July. The Clwydian Range has hill walks, and Chester is about 20 km north.

Welsh cooking in the area includes cawl, a lamb and vegetable broth, Welsh rarebit, Welsh cakes and bara brith, a spiced fruit loaf. Wrexham Lager, first brewed here in the 1880s, was one of the first lagers made in Britain. Summers are mild with occasional showers, and May to September is the best time for the hills and canals, while winters are damp and cool.
