Vigo is the largest city in Galicia, built on hills that drop to the Ría de Vigo, a deep Atlantic inlet sheltered by islands. It is one of Europe's major fishing ports, and the old fishermen's quarter of O Berbés and the streets above still serve the sea. On the Rúa da Pescadería, women known as the ostreiras sell fresh oysters from stalls. Monte O Castro, a hilltop park with the remains of a fortress, looks over the city and the ría.
The Cíes Islands, in the Atlantic Islands National Park, have white-sand beaches, cliffs and seabirds, and boats cross to them from the port. Along the ría, the walled town of Baiona, with a replica of the caravel La Pinta, recalls the news of Columbus's return in 1493. Cangas faces the city across the water, and the Portuguese border at the Miño river and the Albariño vineyards of Rías Baixas lie to the south.
Oysters, mussels from the rafts in the ría, grilled fish and octopus are the daily food, with Albariño white wine and a bowl of Galician broth in cooler months. In December the city's Christmas lights, spread across the centre, are among the best known in Spain. The weather is mild, and wetter in autumn and winter.
