Experience the best of Tweed Heads

Tweed Heads stands at the mouth of the Tweed River, the northernmost town on the New South Wales coast, and it runs straight into Coolangatta, so that the state border is a line on a map more than a break in the streets. Point Danger, the headland between the two, was named by Captain Cook in 1770 for the reefs offshore, and a lighthouse and a memorial stand there.

Surfers come for the long breaks at Duranbah and nearby Snapper Rocks, and families for the sheltered river and calm beaches. Inland, the farmland of the Tweed Valley leads to Murwillumbah and the great bowl of the extinct Tweed volcano, whose central plug is Mount Warning, known to the Bundjalung people as Wollumbin. The Tweed Regional Gallery in Murwillumbah shows Australian art.

Sugar cane, bananas and avocados grow in the valley, and fresh seafood and relaxed beachfront cafés are part of daily life on both sides of the border. The subtropical climate keeps winters mild and sunny.
