Experience the best of Sydney

Sydney wraps around a glittering natural harbour, with a famous sail-roofed opera house, golden surf beaches and an easygoing outdoor life.

The Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge face each other across Circular Quay, where ferries come and go. The Rocks, the old colonial quarter, has sandstone pubs and weekend markets, and the Royal Botanic Garden curves around Farm Cove to Mrs Macquarie's Chair for the classic view of both landmarks.

Bondi Beach is famous for its surf and for the clifftop coastal walk south to Coogee, and a ferry ride to Manly reaches another fine beach. Darling Harbour has museums and an aquarium, Taronga Zoo looks across the water to the city, and neighbourhoods such as Surry Hills, Newtown and Paddington are full of cafés and bars. New Year's Eve fireworks over the harbour are renowned.

Sydney eats well, with fresh seafood, a devoted brunch culture and flavours from across Asia. Summer, from December to February, is beach season, and from about May to November humpback whales pass the headlands on their migration along the coast. The Blue Mountains, with their eucalyptus forests and sandstone cliffs, and the Hunter Valley wine region make good trips.
