from$178
Byron Bay is a relaxed coastal town in northern New South Wales, with surf beaches, a historic lighthouse and the easternmost point of mainland Australia.
Cape Byron, the easternmost point of mainland Australia, has a white lighthouse from 1901 and a walking track around the headland, where dolphins swim below and humpback whales pass offshore on their winter and spring migrations. The town has a long, gently curving beach, with surfers at The Pass and quieter sand at Wategos. Offshore, the Julian Rocks marine reserve draws divers to see turtles, rays and, in season, sharks.
Behind the coast, green hills hold the towns of Bangalow and Mullumbimby, the waterfalls and rainforest of Nightcap National Park, and Nimbin, a home for alternative lifestyles since the early 1970s. The volcanic cone of Wollumbin, or Mount Warning, rises inland to the north-west. Brunswick Heads and Ballina are small coastal towns on either side.
Cafés, bakeries and weekend markets are part of Byron's identity, with seafood on the menu and macadamias, bananas and coffee grown in the hinterland. Live music is part of the town's evenings. The climate is subtropical, with warm, humid summers and mild, drier winters.
