Experience the best of Darwin
Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory, is a tropical harbour city on the Timor Sea and the gateway to Kakadu and Litchfield national parks.

Darwin lies on a deep natural harbour on Australia's northern coast, nearer to Indonesia than to most Australian cities. It was bombed by Japanese aircraft in February 1942 and flattened by Cyclone Tracy on Christmas Eve 1974, so most of the centre is modern. The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory tells that story alongside Aboriginal art and natural history.
East Point Reserve has wallabies and a coastline of mangroves and old gun emplacements, and wartime oil storage tunnels were cut into the rock beneath the city. Day trips run to Litchfield National Park, with its waterfalls, swimming holes and magnetic termite mounds, and to Kakadu, a long drive east, where rock shelters hold Aboriginal paintings many thousands of years old. Saltwater crocodiles live in the rivers and are the region's best-known wildlife.
Barramundi, mud crab, buffalo and mango feature in local cooking, along with laksa and other dishes that reflect the city's Asian neighbours and communities. The tropical Top End has two seasons: a humid wet from about November to April, with monsoon storms, and a drier, cooler season from May to October when the markets and outdoor dining come out.
