Experience the best of Adelaide

Adelaide is a relaxed, green capital of South Australia, laid out as a grid inside a ring of parkland, with wine country and beaches close by.

Colonel William Light planned Adelaide in 1837 as a tidy grid of streets and five squares, then circled it with the parklands that still separate the centre from the suburbs. North Terrace lines up the state library, art gallery, museum and university, and the Torrens River runs through the middle, with the Adelaide Oval on its bank. Rundle Mall and the Central Market cover shopping and food.

A tram runs from Victoria Square to Glenelg, a seaside suburb with a jetty and a long beach on Gulf St Vincent. In the other direction the Adelaide Hills rise within half an hour, with Hahndorf, a village founded by German settlers, and the vineyards of the Barossa Valley are around an hour away. McLaren Vale lies south, and Kangaroo Island is reached by ferry from Cape Jervis.

Local food and drink lead the way here: oysters from Coffin Bay on the Eyre Peninsula, shiraz from the Barossa, and the pie floater, a meat pie served upside down in pea soup. The city holds festivals through the year, with the Fringe filling February and March.
