Perth sits where the Swan River widens into a broad estuary on the Indian Ocean coast, and it is often described as one of the most remote large cities in the world, with Adelaide more than two thousand kilometres to the east. Kings Park, a large reserve of bushland and botanic garden on a hill, looks over the skyline and the water, and the Elizabeth Quay waterfront anchors the centre.
Fremantle, a port town at the river mouth, keeps its limestone warehouses, its Round House jail from 1831 and a market hall built in the 1890s, and its old convict prison is a World Heritage site. Ferries cross to Rottnest Island, home to small marsupials called quokkas. The Swan Valley has vineyards, and the Margaret River wine region and the Pinnacles desert are longer drives.
Western rock lobster, known locally as crayfish, and fresh fish from the coast anchor the menus, while Margaret River and the Swan Valley supply the wine. Cottesloe's long beach is the place for sunsets over the ocean. Summer afternoons are cooled by a sea breeze that locals call the Fremantle Doctor, and wildflowers cover the bush in spring.
