Experience the best of Blue Mountains
A sandstone plateau west of Sydney, the Blue Mountains are carved into deep eucalyptus gorges, sheer cliffs and the rock towers of the Three Sisters.

The plateau rises behind Sydney in the Great Dividing Range, its edges broken into cliffs that fall away into forested valleys such as the Jamison and the Grose. Katoomba is the main town, and Echo Point looks across to the Three Sisters, a trio of sandstone pillars. The blue haze that gives the range its name is put down to a fine mist of eucalyptus oil in the air, and the surrounding region lies within a World Heritage area.
Leura, next door to Katoomba, has a main street of cafés and galleries, and gardens that colour in spring and autumn. Further along the ridge, Wentworth Falls and Govetts Leap at Blackheath bring waterfalls and wide views, and Mount Tomah Botanic Garden grows cool-climate plants at height. South-west of Katoomba, Jenolan Caves is a system of limestone caverns.
Tea rooms, pubs with open fires and long café breakfasts suit the mountain towns, and walking tracks of every length start from the lookouts. The air is cooler than in Sydney, so winter days can be crisp and frosty with an occasional dusting of snow, while the European trees planted in town gardens turn gold and red in autumn.
