The Gold Coast stretches along the shore between the New South Wales border and the Broadwater, a ribbon of broad, patrolled surf beaches broken by headlands. Surfers Paradise has the tallest towers and the busiest beachfront. Burleigh Heads, further south, has a forested headland park above a rocky point break, and Coolangatta and Snapper Rocks at the southern end are known for their long, well-formed waves.
Behind the beaches the land rises into the hinterland. Springbrook and Lamington national parks protect waterfalls and subtropical forest that belong to the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage area, and Tamborine Mountain has walking tracks, galleries and small wineries. A wildlife sanctuary at Currumbin shows off koalas, kangaroos and lorikeets, and Brisbane lies about seventy kilometres to the north.
Seafood is the local habit, from prawns and Moreton Bay bugs to fish and chips eaten on the sand, and the cafés around Burleigh and Miami serve strong coffee and big breakfasts. Craft breweries and distilleries have spread through the back streets. Summers are warm, humid and stormy, while the mild, dry winters are when humpback whales pass offshore on their migration.
