Torrevieja sits on the southern end of the Costa Blanca, in Alicante province, with a busy port, a long seafront promenade and a string of small beaches. Behind the town lie the salt lagoons of La Mata and Torrevieja, a natural park where flamingos feed and the water turns pink in summer, and salt has been harvested for centuries and shipped from the port. The Museo del Mar y de la Sal tells that story.
The Delfín, a retired Spanish Navy submarine, is open to visitors beside the harbour, and the town hosts an international habaneras singing festival each July. The sand dunes and pine woods of Guardamar, the palm grove of Elche, a UNESCO site, and the city of Alicante are within reach, and the Mar Menor lagoon lies to the south.
Rice dishes cooked in fish stock, such as arroz a banda and caldero, fresh seafood and salt-cured fish are the local cooking. The town is among the sunniest places in Spain, with very little rain, warm winters that suit walking, and long, hot summers when the sea is warm enough for swimming into October.
