Experience the best of Stansted Mountfitchet

Stansted Mountfitchet is a large village in north-west Essex, between London and Cambridge, close to the Hertfordshire border. Its main street runs down into a valley and holds old inns, small shops and cottages. A Norman motte-and-bailey castle once stood on the hill above, and a reconstructed castle and village now occupy the site. London Stansted Airport lies just to the north-east.

An eighteenth-century tower windmill stands at the edge of the village. Hatfield Forest, a surviving medieval royal hunting forest of ancient woodland and a lake, lies a few kilometres to the south-east. Bishop's Stortford, Saffron Walden with its Jacobean mansion at Audley End, and the university city of Cambridge are all nearby.

Village pubs serve roasts and ales, and farm shops in the surrounding countryside sell local produce. Essex is one of the driest counties in England, so the area has bright summers and mild winters, and a railway line links the village to London.
