Experience the best of St John's

St John's is the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, a steep harbour city of painted row houses, lively pubs, sea cliffs and Atlantic icebergs.

Read moreShow less

St John's clings to the hills around a deep harbour on the Avalon Peninsula, entered through a narrow gap in the cliffs known as The Narrows. Fishing fleets from Europe used the harbour from the 1500s. Rows of brightly painted wooden houses climb the slopes, and Signal Hill above the entrance carries Cabot Tower, close to where Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in 1901.

George Street is the centre of the city's pub life, with live folk music, and the Basilica of St John the Baptist watches over downtown. The Rooms is a museum, art gallery and archive on a hilltop. Cape Spear, the easternmost point of North America outside Greenland, has a lighthouse, and boat trips from nearby Bay Bulls visit seabird colonies, including puffins, and whales in summer.

Traditional Newfoundland food includes fish and brewis, made with salt cod and hard bread, toutons of fried dough with molasses, and a Jiggs dinner of salt beef and vegetables. Newcomers may be screeched in with a shot of rum and a kiss for a cod. Icebergs drift past in spring and early summer, fog is common, and the weather changes fast.
