Experience the best of Scarborough

Scarborough's castle ruins stand on a rocky headland between the North Bay and the South Bay, a twelfth-century keep and curtain wall with wide views over the North Sea. The town claims to be England's first seaside resort, after a spring found beneath the cliffs in the seventeenth century drew visitors to take the waters. Victorian hotels above the sea front, and the Spa on the South Bay with its concert hall, date from the resort's heyday.

Peasholm Park is a Japanese-style garden around a lake, and the Rotunda Museum was built to show off the geology of the Yorkshire coast. Anne Brontë died in the town in 1849 and lies buried in St Mary's churchyard below the castle. The North York Moors begin inland, Robin Hood's Bay and Whitby are a short way up the coast, and the chalk cliffs of Flamborough Head run south.

Fish and chips eaten on the harbour front is the town's trademark meal, with haddock landed by the boats in the old harbour and crab and lobster from the coast. Beaches fill in summer, while autumn and winter bring blustery walks along the cliff path, with waves breaking over the harbour wall.
