Experience the best of Savannah

Savannah is a Georgia coastal city of oak-shaded squares, Spanish moss, cobbled riverfront streets and beautifully kept Southern architecture.

Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe as the first city of the colony of Georgia, and he laid it out on a grid built around small public squares. Twenty-two of the squares survive, shaded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss and filled with fountains and monuments. Forsyth Park, with its white fountain, is the largest green space in the historic district, and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist rises with twin spires.

River Street runs along the Savannah River below the bluff, a cobbled lane of old cotton warehouses now holding shops and cafés, with ships passing close by. Bonaventure Cemetery, shaded by moss-hung oaks, is one of the city's most atmospheric places. The city was spared in the Civil War, when General Sherman offered it to President Lincoln as a Christmas gift in 1864. Tybee Island, with its beach and lighthouse, is about 25 kilometres east.

Shrimp and grits, Lowcountry boil and pralines made with pecans are local flavours, and oysters from the coast are served roasted. The Girl Scouts of the USA were founded here by Juliette Gordon Low, whose birthplace can be visited. Azaleas bloom around the squares in spring, and St Patrick's Day brings a huge parade.
