Highlights

This is a self-guided exploration game where you'll be solving a paranormal case involving stories about wandering ghosts. The file on Savannah's Historic District has been open since 1955. You, with your detective and observational skills, and a little help from the Questo app, will try to close it in 2 hours. The route takes you square by square through 13 of the most haunted addresses in town. Your job is to check every famous ghost story against the paper record. You'll discover dark stories like the servant girl the colony waited to hang until she gave birth, the seven hundred fever victims buried in one trench, and the famous inn ghost who lived into her eighties. Each location involves inspecting a real-world object and solving a challenge. Best after dark with your phone torch on. About 1.8 miles of walking, with unlimited breaks. Hints and 24/7 support available if you get stuck. Perfect for Halloween or any night you're in the mood for creepy ghost stories.

Itinerary

  1. You'll start on Johnson Square, the first square the colony ever laid out, where the app opens your case file and introduces the agent running it. Your first task will be to find an inscription on the marble obelisk and supply a missing word. Once you solve it, you learn why the monument stood over nobody at all for seventy-six years.

    10 min

  2. You'll walk over to Ellis Square and pick the real version of its bronze statue out of four doctored photos. You'll learn that this is the only square Savannah ever sold, what the City Market traded here from 1763, and what stood on the ground for fifty years afterwards.

    8 min

  3. You'll continue to Franklin Square and inspect the arched windows of First African Baptist Church to solve a challenge. You'll learn how its members, enslaved and free, built it brick by brick after dark, and why it's the only building on the route still doing the job it was built for.

    8 min

  4. You'll head to Telfair Square and find the year hidden under a sticker on the door of Trinity Church. You'll learn why John Wesley, later the most famous preacher of his century, left Savannah at night in 1737 with a grand jury indictment behind him.

    8 min

  5. You'll walk to Wright Square, the colony's old court square, and solve a riddle under the live oaks. You'll learn the story of Alice Riley, the Irish servant girl who became the first woman the colony ever hanged, in 1735, and the one thing she asks of you.

    10 min

  6. You'll stop at Oglethorpe's statue on Chippewa Square and compare the stone lion at its corner with your photo to spot what has been removed. You'll learn why the general faces the wrong way, and where the famous bench really is.

    8 min

  7. You'll reach the gates of Colonial Park Cemetery and decode a question with all its vowels missing, then answer it from the stone arch. You'll learn how many people lie under its six acres, what happened in the summer of 1820, and why the seven-foot murderer every tour sells was never born.

    10 min

  8. You'll walk to the Owens-Thomas House on Oglethorpe Square, unscramble a message and inspect the cast-iron balcony to answer it. You'll learn about the blue ceiling the enslaved household painted over the carriage house, and why it's still there.

    10 min

  9. You'll cross Reynolds Square to the Olde Pink House and find the detail that exists only in your photo of the Planters Tavern sign. You'll learn why the house is pink by accident and what paid for the brick.

    9 min

  10. You'll finish at Christ Church on Johnson Square, where the colony kept its register of births, marriages and burials. You'll follow a final set of coded directions through the dark streets to a door under a gilded cross and spell out a true name to close the file.

    9 min

About Savannah

Savannah is a Georgia coastal city of oak-shaded squares, Spanish moss, cobbled riverfront streets and beautifully kept Southern architecture.

Savannah was founded in 1733 by James Oglethorpe as the first city of the colony of Georgia, and he laid it out on a grid built around small public squares. Twenty-two of the squares survive, shaded by live oaks draped in Spanish moss and filled with fountains and monuments. Forsyth Park, with its white fountain, is the largest green space in the historic district, and the Cathedral of St John the Baptist rises with twin spires.

Top-ranked sights in Savannah: Savannah River Street, Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Forsyth Park.
