Santiago de Compostela grew around the tomb of St James the Apostle, said to have been found in the ninth century, and pilgrims have walked here along the Camino de Santiago for a thousand years. The cathedral dominates the Praza do Obradoiro with a baroque façade facing the square; inside, the Romanesque Portico of Glory has carved figures, and a giant incense burner, the botafumeiro, swings on special occasions. The old town is a UNESCO site.
Granite arcades, plazas and stone lanes fill the old town, with the Mercado de Abastos, a food market in stone halls. Rain is frequent, which keeps the parks green, and the Alameda park gives a view of the cathedral across the rooftops. Out of town, Fisterra, on the Atlantic coast to the west, was long seen as the end of the known world, and the Rías Baixas coast has deep inlets and fishing ports.
Pulpo á feira, octopus boiled and served on wooden plates with paprika, Padrón peppers, some mild and some hot, and empanada gallega are the classics. Tarta de Santiago, an almond cake dusted with sugar over a cross of St James, is the sweet, and Albariño is the white wine of the nearby Rías Baixas. The weather is wet and mild, and summer is the driest season.
