Phan Thiet lies at the mouth of the Ca Ty River in Binh Thuan province, a working port with a harbour full of blue fishing boats. The town is Vietnam's best-known producer of fish sauce, made from anchovies fermented in large barrels, and fishing, dragon fruit and tourism fill the economy. Po Sah Inu, a group of Cham brick towers built more than a thousand years ago, stands on a hill at the edge of the city.

Mui Ne, east of the centre, is a long beach resort with steady winds that make it one of Vietnam's kitesurfing centres. Behind it rise the red and white sand dunes, where visitors slide down the slopes, and the Fairy Stream runs through red sand cliffs. The fishing village at Mui Ne has a bay of blue boats, and the Ke Ga lighthouse stands on a rocky islet down the coast to the south-west of the city.

Grilled seafood, crab, squid and banh xeo, crisp pancakes filled with shrimp and herbs, are served at beach restaurants, and sweet-and-sour fish soups come with fresh herbs. The dragon fruit grown here is sold at roadside stalls. Binh Thuan is one of the driest provinces in Vietnam, with sunshine for most of the year.
