Patmos is a small, rocky island in the Aegean Sea, north-west of Kos and reached by ferry. Its main town, Chora, climbs a hill around the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, a fortified monastery founded in the eleventh century, and the harbour of Skala lies on the coast below. The monastery and the town are a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The Cave of the Apocalypse, where tradition says Saint John received his visions, lies below the monastery and is visited by pilgrims and walkers. Lambi, a beach of coloured pebbles, is reached by road, and Psili Ammos, a sandy cove, by footpath or boat. The small islands of Lipsi and Arki lie close by, reached by ferry.
Food at the harbour tavernas of Skala centres on fresh fish and octopus, with local cheeses and honey. The island is quiet and often windy. The summer months bring ferry visitors and warm days, and spring and early autumn are the most pleasant seasons for walking the island's paths.
