Experience the best of Palma de Mallorca
Palma, capital of Mallorca, is a Mediterranean city of a vast sea-facing Gothic cathedral, an old town of courtyards, a hilltop castle and a long bay.

Palma lies on a wide bay on the south-west coast of Mallorca, in the Balearic Islands. The Gothic cathedral La Seu rises on the seafront, its enormous rose window one of the largest of its kind, and the Almudaina Palace, a royal palace of Moorish origin, stands beside it. The old town behind has narrow lanes, courtyards, the Gothic Llotja exchange and the Arab Baths.
Bellver Castle, a round Gothic fortress, sits on a wooded hill above the bay, and the Fundació Pilar i Joan Miró, the artist's former studios, is on the western side. The Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage mountain range, rises to the north-west, with Valldemossa, where Chopin spent a winter, and Deià. An old wooden train runs from Palma through the mountains to Sóller, and the island's coves and beaches are a drive away.
Ensaimada, a spiral pastry dusted with icing sugar, is eaten at breakfast, and sobrassada, a soft paprika-spiced sausage, is spread on bread. Summers are hot and dry, spring and autumn mild and bright, and almond trees flower in late winter. Tumbet, a dish of baked vegetables, and a glass of hierbas, a herbal liqueur, are the other tastes of the island table.
