Experience the best of Nanded

Nanded lies on the banks of the Godavari River in the Marathwada region of Maharashtra. It is one of the holiest places in Sikhism: Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru, spent his last months here and died in 1708, after naming the Guru Granth Sahib as the eternal Guru. The gurdwara of Hazur Sahib, one of the five Takhts of the Sikh faith, rises beside the river with a gilded dome and white marble courtyards.

Other gurdwaras dot the old city, and ghats line the river. The Kandhar fort, a moated stronghold of Rashtrakuta origin with heavy walls, lies to the south-west. Mahur, with its temple of the goddess Renuka, a Shakti Peetha, stands to the north-east, within Nanded district.

The gurdwara serves free communal meals, the langar, to everyone who comes. Marathwada cooking means jowar flatbreads with a chilli and garlic chutney, pithla, a gram-flour curry, and puran poli, a sweet stuffed bread. Hola Mohalla, in spring, brings processions and displays of Sikh martial arts to the streets around the gurdwara.
