Mont Tremblant rises to 875 metres in the Laurentian Mountains, north-west of Montreal, and the resort village at its base is a cluster of brightly painted buildings with pedestrian lanes, shops and cafés in a French-Canadian style. The Laurentians have been ski country since the 1930s, and a gondola carries riders up the mountain in summer as well as winter.
Behind the resort, Mont-Tremblant National Park, created in 1894, covers rivers, lakes and forest, with moose, black bears and wolves, and trails for hiking, canoeing and cross-country skiing. The P'tit Train du Nord, a former railway line turned into a long linear park, runs through the area for cycling in summer and skiing in winter. Lac Tremblant, below the village, is used for swimming and paddling.
Maple syrup turns up everywhere, on pancakes, in sugar pie and as chewy taffy poured over snow. Poutine, smoked-meat sandwiches and crêpes are staples of the village. Winters are long and snowy, and the maple forests turn red and gold around the end of September.
