Highlights

“The best way to know a city is to walk it.” Simone de Beauvoir, renowned French writer, was right. And it is especially true for Marseille. Marseille is unique, a city with 100 personnalities, an oxymoron where calm and noise live together in a chaotic harmony. The oldest city in France, 2600 years old, still has a young beating heart, and the best way to feel it is to simply walk on it. On this tour of 8 people maximum, you'll experience and discover, with a local, passionate and bilingual guide, what makes Marseille, Marseille. We will wander through the small and only walkable streets of Le Panier, learn about Marseille's rich history one monument after the other. We will climb to Notre Dame de la Garde, overlooking the panoramic view of the city, see hidden gems that can be only seen on foot, lose ourselves in Le Roucas Blanc, and go back in time visiting the little fishing port of Le Vallon des Auffes. And so, so much more. Join us exploring this southern treasure.

  • 5Unique Sights and a Wonderful Guide

What a great experience! Charlie was fantastic. He did a great job explaining the area and took us to some unique sites that we probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise. He was friendly, knowledgeable, and very helpful, even giving us recommendations for additional places to shop for souvenirs and grab some food. We really enjoyed our time with him and would highly recommend him!

A great tour to see all the important places that make up the diverse city of Marseille. Our tour guide was knowledgeable about all areas of Marseille and you could tell he loved his city. He met us very close to our cruise port. We enjoyed this small group tour.

  • 4Caroline is an AMAZING guide. Skipped 2 places.

Caroline is an amazing guide. Although English is not her first language, she has great English. You can tell that she's really passionate about her city and its history. She explained that the history of Marseille, with the support of pictures, anecdotes and funny personal stories during our walk. The day of our walking tour, it was quite hot, so we took the public transit up to the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de la Garde. Our group had 5 people and Caroline was considerate of everyone's physical abilities and gave the group time to take pictures. The reason why I gave the tour a 4 and not a 5 stars is because, contrary to what was described in the itinerary, we did not go to Vallon des Auffres and Palais Pharo.

  • 5The many facets of marvellous Marseille

Our walking tour with Caroline was outstanding. It was comprehensive and at exactly the right pace. In her very engaging manner, she revealed so much about the city, its history and its people that I very soon realized I hadn’t allotted nearly enough time to this amazing city. I’ve resolved to return for at least a week to do it justice.

About Marseille

Marseille, France's oldest city, is a Mediterranean port of old forts, hilltop basilicas and limestone coves, and the home of bouillabaisse.

Greek sailors founded Marseille around 600 BC, making it the oldest city in France. The Vieux-Port is its centre, a long harbour ringed by cafés and the morning fish stalls, guarded by two forts at its mouth. On a hill above, the basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde carries a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary and shows the harbour and the islands from its terrace.

Top-ranked sights in Marseille: Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica (La Bonne Mère), Old Port of Marseille (Vieux Port), Vallon des Auffes.
