Marbella lies on the Costa del Sol in Andalusia, with the limestone peaks of the Sierra Blanca rising straight behind the town and sheltering it from the cold north. The old town is a compact grid of whitewashed lanes, flower pots and plazas, centred on the Plaza de los Naranjos, a square of orange trees, with the remains of a Moorish castle nearby.
A long seafront promenade links the beaches, and Dalí sculptures stand along the Avenida del Mar. West of the centre, the Golden Mile leads to Puerto Banús, a marina of large yachts and cafés. Up in the hills, the villages of Ojén and Istán have cool springs and mountain trails, Ronda's gorge bridge is about an hour inland, and Gibraltar lies along the coast to the south-west.
Espeto de sardinas, sardines grilled on skewers over a wood fire on the beach, is the local speciality, with fried fish from the Málaga coast, cold gazpacho and almond soup. Sweet Málaga wine and the local olive oil complete the table.
