Experience the best of Leicester

Leicester stands on the River Soar in the East Midlands, a city that has been settled since Roman times, when it was the town of Ratae Corieltauvorum. The Jewry Wall, a tall stretch of Roman masonry beside the ruins of a bath house, still rises next to the church of St Nicholas. The cathedral holds the tomb of Richard III, whose remains were found in 2012 beneath a car park nearby and reburied in 2015, and a visitor centre in the old grammar school tells the story.

Abbey Park runs beside the river by the ruins of the medieval abbey, and the National Space Centre has a rocket tower and galleries on exploration. The Golden Mile of Belgrave Road is the heart of a large South Asian community, with sari shops, jewellers and sweet shops. Bradgate Park, a deer park with the ruins of Lady Jane Grey's family home, lies to the north-west, and Bosworth Battlefield, where Richard III died in 1485, is to the west.

Belgrave Road is also the place for curries, dosas and sweets, and the county gave its name to Red Leicester cheese and is the source of Melton Mowbray's pork pies. Foxton Locks, a flight of canal locks on the Grand Union, lie to the south-east.
