Kununurra lies in the far north-east of Western Australia, close to the Northern Territory border, on the Ord River. It was founded in the 1960s to serve the Ord River irrigation scheme, which turned dry plains into fields of sugar cane, melons, mangoes and other crops. Red sandstone ranges, boab trees and wide skies surround the town.
Lake Argyle, a huge reservoir behind the Ord River dam and the largest freshwater reservoir in Australia by volume, is dotted with islands and suits boat trips. Mirima National Park, at the edge of town, has striped sandstone domes nicknamed the mini Bungle Bungles. Farther away lie the beehive domes of Purnululu National Park, reached by a rough track, and the Gibb River Road, an outback route that begins west of town.
Barramundi, mangoes and melons are the local tastes, and zebra rock, a striped stone found only in this district, is made into jewellery. The wet season brings storms and swollen rivers, and the dry season clear skies.
