Highlights
This is a Story Walk & one of our most popular tours, certified by so many travelers through the years! If you like listening to stories about the Raj days and Kolkata then this is your tour! It is a very interesting story of how the British started trading in this part of the world rivalling earlier European entrants. Many a booming cannon later, they became the leading traders. What followed was a small fort, a big port, a great battle, many changing fortunes and lots of colonial cunning & politics. The East India Company & later the Flag of the Empire gave a lot of importance to Calcutta for its trading, political and administrative clout. She was after all the Capital of British India for a long time & arguably the second most important city in the Empire. Along with Defense & Administration came institutions for Entertainment, Education & Emancipation. The light of European renaissance came as an ambient source & later cascaded into its own indigenous, self generating brightness.

5Highly recommended
Very interesting tour. Very knowledgeable and courteous guide.
5Want to know more about my city
The experience was excellent. Never knew that there is so much we don’t know about this city, even though spent a good part of my life here. Kaushik is a story teller of vey high statue. He remembers each and every date and every name of characters who played a part in creating history of this great city. Walking with him in this city is like walking back in time 100 of years, and relish the marvel of new creation and architecture of those time and also feel the pain of many sad moments and sacrifices.
5Understood my city better
Excellent walk. Kaushik has vast knowledge and made us understand the history of Kolkata very well. Very gentle person . Will take the walk again in near future
5Kaushik Knows Calcutta Like Few Others Do
I have spent time with Kaushik on multiple visits to Kolkata, and, over the years, he has become the reason I set aside at least a couple of days every time I travel there. He is an articulate storyteller — the kind who draws you into a city rather than merely narrating it. His knowledge of Kolkata and Bengal runs deep, accumulated over years of genuine love for the place. He takes time with questions, gives complete answers, and never makes you feel rushed. What sets Kaushik apart, beyond the knowledge, is the warmth. He is accommodating, flexible, and genuinely glad to have you along. These walks feel less like guided tours and more like a conversation with someone who has devoted his life to understanding Eastern India and Kolkata. I cannot recommend him highly enough.
5Early morning walking tour of the British colonial sites, good for beating the heat!
The tour commences at 6:30 AM and lasts until 9:15 which is very early but beats the heat and traffic and allows tourists to go back to the hotel for a late breakfast (or late morning snooze). The tour guide was very informative and knowledgeable. We had a great time walking the streets and sampling the early morning chai tea. This tour allows time for another tour later in the day!
5Super interesting city walk
Loved the walk, Kaushik was a great storyteller and we loved learning about Calcutta's history. Highly recommend, despite the early start.

About Kolkata
Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal and the former capital of British India, a river city of colonial buildings, bookshops, sweets and Durga Puja.
Kolkata grew from three villages on the Hooghly River and was the capital of British India until 1911. Colonial landmarks include the Victoria Memorial, a white marble hall set in gardens, St Paul's Cathedral, and the Indian Museum, founded in 1814. The Howrah Bridge, a steel cantilever bridge over the Hooghly, carries enormous crowds, and hand-pulled rickshaws and trams still run in the streets.
Top-ranked sights in Kolkata: Mother House of the Missionaries of Charity, Victoria Memorial Hall, Howrah Bridge.
