Kelowna sits on the shore of Okanagan Lake, a long lake in the dry interior valley of southern British Columbia, with hills of sagebrush and pine on every side. The city has a lakefront with beaches and a waterfront park, an arts district and the historic Father Pandosy Mission, founded in 1859. Its name is said to come from a Syilx word for grizzly bear.
The valley is one of Canada's main wine regions. Wineries stretch along both sides of the lake and south to Penticton, Naramata and Osoyoos, with tastings among the vines, and orchards of cherries, apples and peaches line the roads. Kettle Valley railway trails, including the Myra Canyon trestles, suit cyclists, and the Big White and Silver Star ski areas lie in the hills to the east and north.
Roadside fruit stands sell cherries, peaches and apricots in summer, and wineries serve meals on their terraces, with Pinot Gris, Merlot and Riesling among the leading wines. Craft breweries and cideries have followed the orchards. The long, hot, dry summers are the high season, and winters bring snow to the hills.
