Experience the best of Katakolo

Katakolo is a small port on the west coast of the Peloponnese and the nearest harbour to ancient Olympia, where the Olympic Games began.

Katakolo sits at the tip of a small cape in the region of Elis, facing the Ionian Sea, with the island of Zakynthos visible on a clear day across the water. The port is a small waterfront of tavernas and cafés along a quay. Pyrgos, the regional town, lies a short way inland, and the coast on either side has long sandy beaches.

The ancient sanctuary of Olympia, about thirty-five kilometres inland in a wooded valley, was the site of the original Olympic Games. Its remains include the Temple of Zeus, the workshop of the sculptor Pheidias, the stadium with its stone starting line, and the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic flame is still lit. The Archaeological Museum holds the figure of Hermes with the infant Dionysus and sculptures from the Temple of Zeus.

Tavernas along the quay serve grilled fish, octopus and Greek salad with local olive oil, and the region's olives, honey and cheeses are on sale in village shops. Elis is farming country of olive groves and vineyards. Summers are hot and dry, and April, May and October suit walking among the ruins.
