Experience the best of İzmir
İzmir is Turkey's third-largest city, an Aegean port with an old bazaar, a seafront promenade and the ancient ruins of Ephesus and Pergamon within reach.

İzmir, known to the ancient Greeks as Smyrna, lies at the head of a deep gulf on the Aegean coast. Konak Square has an ornate clock tower from 1901 and the small Konak Mosque, and the Kemeraltı bazaar sprawls behind it with workshops, mosques and old caravanserais. The Asansör, a historic lift in the Karataş district, rises to a terrace overlooking the gulf, and a long promenade, the Kordon, runs beside the water.
Kadifekale, a hilltop fortress, and the excavated Agora of Smyrna recall the Greek and Roman city. Ferries cross the gulf to Karşıyaka. Ephesus, with its library façade and great theatre, is about an hour south, with the village of Şirince in the hills nearby, and Pergamon's acropolis lies north. West of the city the Çeşme peninsula has beaches, windsurfing at Alaçatı, and old stone houses.
Boyoz, a flaky pastry of Sephardic Jewish origin, is eaten for breakfast with a boiled egg and tea, and gevrek, a sesame ring, and kumru, a toasted sandwich, are street food. İzmir köfte, meatballs baked with potato in tomato sauce, and stuffed mussels are favourites. Herbs, olive oil and Aegean greens shape the local cooking.
