The town curves around a bay with a busy cruise port, a marina and Pigeon Island, linked to the shore by a causeway and topped by a small stone fortress. The old town's streets climb behind the harbour with bazaars, cafés and restaurants, and beaches such as Ladies Beach and Long Beach stretch along the coast.

Ephesus lies a short drive inland, its marble streets leading past the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre and terraced houses with mosaics and frescoes. Nearby are the House of the Virgin Mary, a pilgrimage site, the lone column of the Temple of Artemis, once one of the Seven Wonders, and the Basilica of St John at Selçuk. The hillside village of Şirince is known for its fruit wines and stone houses.

Dilek Peninsula National Park offers quiet coves and forest walks, and the ruins of Priene, Miletus and Didyma make a classic circuit. The local table leans to the Aegean, with olive-oil vegetable dishes, fresh fish and wild herbs. In spring, wildflowers bloom among the ruins of Ephesus, and summer is hot and busy on the beaches.
