Alanya spreads across and around a rocky peninsula that juts into the Mediterranean, with the Taurus Mountains rising steeply behind. The castle that covers the headland dates mainly from the thirteenth century, when the Seljuk sultan Alaeddin Keykubad made the town a winter capital, and its walls run down to the harbour. The Red Tower, an octagonal tower beside the harbour, and the old shipyard are Seljuk works too.

Damlataş Cave has stalactites and a damp air, and Cleopatra's Beach, a golden strip west of the castle, is the main swimming beach. Dim Cave and the cool Dim River lie to the east, and the ancient city of Syedra and the Sapadere canyon are inland. Side and the waterfall at Manavgat are west along the coast, and Antalya is about two hours from town.

Alanya is known for bananas, which grow in greenhouses on the narrow coastal plain, and for fresh fish, grilled sea bass and sea bream, served by the harbour. Gözleme, filled flatbread baked on a griddle, and fresh orange juice are sold at village stalls. The swimming season is long.
