Experience the best of Bodrum
Bodrum, on Turkey's Aegean coast, is a whitewashed harbour town beneath a Crusader castle, with ancient ruins and coves, facing the Greek island of Kos.

Bodrum curves around two bays beneath the Castle of St Peter, a fortress built by the Knights of St John in the fifteenth century and now home to a museum of underwater archaeology. The town stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, birthplace of the historian Herodotus, and the remains of the Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, lie in a quiet garden.
White houses covered in bougainvillea climb the hills, an ancient theatre looks over the harbour, and boats leave for the bays of the peninsula. Gümüşlük, a fishing village with submerged ruins and sunset restaurants on the sand, Yalıkavak's marina and Türkbükü's coves lie along the coast. Ferries cross to the Greek island of Kos in under an hour, and gulets sail along the coast on the traditional 'blue voyage'.
Bodrum's tangerines are well known, and local cooking relies on herbs, olive oil and wild greens, with grilled octopus, sea bass and meze. Çökertme kebab, shredded beef over yoghurt and fried potato strips, is a Bodrum dish. The meltem, a steady north wind, cools July and August.
