Kaş lies on the Lycian coast of Antalya province, a small town on a bay with steep wooded hills behind, white houses draped in bougainvillea and a harbour of fishing boats. It stands on the site of the ancient Lycian city of Antiphellos, and a Hellenistic theatre and Lycian rock tombs, including a tomb with a lion carved on its lid, survive.
The Greek island of Kastellorizo lies just offshore, a short ferry ride away. Boat trips visit Kekova, a sunken Lycian city whose tombs and walls lie beneath clear water, and the village of Kaleköy with its castle. Kaputaş Beach, a tiny cove between cliffs reached by a stairway, lies along the coast road to Kalkan, and the ruins of Xanthos and Letoon, a UNESCO site, and the long beach of Patara are further west.
Mezes, grilled sea bass and calamari are served in harbour restaurants, with a Turkish breakfast of cheese, olives and honey. Kaş is also known for diving, with reefs and caves close to shore. Summers are hot and dry, and the sea stays warm until October.
