Selçuk is a small town in İzmir Province, about three kilometres from the ruins of Ephesus, one of the great cities of the Roman east, with the Library of Celsus, a huge theatre and streets lined with columns. In Selçuk itself a single column marks the site of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the ancient world. The Basilica of St John stands on Ayasuluk Hill below a Byzantine fortress, and the İsa Bey Mosque dates from 1375.
The House of the Virgin Mary is a small stone chapel on a wooded hill, where tradition says Mary spent her last years, and it is visited by both Christians and Muslims. Şirince, a hillside village of old stone houses, lies about eight kilometres away. The Ephesus Archaeological Museum holds finds from the excavations, and storks nest on the arches of the old aqueduct. The beaches of Pamucak and the resort coast around Kuşadası are close.
Gözleme, thin flatbreads filled with cheese or greens, and grilled köfte are served in garden restaurants, and the Aegean kitchen leans on olive oil, figs and vegetables. Şirince is known for fruit wines, made from peach, pomegranate and other fruit. A weekly market fills the town centre.
