Experience the best of Holyhead

Holyhead stands on Holy Island, joined to Anglesey by an embankment and a bridge, and is the ferry port for Dublin across the Irish Sea. St Cybi's Church sits inside the walls of a small Roman fort beside the harbour, and the Holyhead Breakwater, built over decades in the nineteenth century, is the longest in Britain and runs for more than two kilometres beside a country park.

South Stack, a lighthouse of 1809 on a rocky islet reached by a long flight of steps and a bridge, stands under cliffs thick with guillemots and razorbills, and puffins nest there in spring. Holyhead Mountain rises behind it, with the foundations of ancient round houses on its slopes. Trearddur Bay has a sandy beach on the same island, and Beaumaris Castle and the Menai Strait lie a drive to the east.

Anglesey lamb, Menai mussels, sea salt and Welsh cakes are the island's tastes, with fish and chips by the harbour and cawl on cold days. The air is mild and windy, the seabird colonies are at their liveliest in late spring, and in winter the sea can be dramatic.
